Introduction to Mental Health
General Mental Health Services
Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing and it affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through to adulthood.
Even though 1 in 4 people have mental health problems, most of us don’t get the help we need. Often, because of misconceptions about mental health and mental fitness, people suffer in silence and their conditions go untreated. This can sadly lead to mental health problems such as the ones listed below:-
- Anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and phobias.
- Depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders.
- Eating disorders.
- Personality disorders.
- Post-traumatic stress disorder.
- Psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia.
In adults and adolescents, we need to be aware of the warning signs of mental illness which can include the following:
- Excessive worrying or fear
- Feeling excessively sad or low
- Confused thinking or problems concentrating and learning.
- Extreme mood changes, including uncontrollable “highs” or feelings of euphoria
- Prolonged or strong feelings of irritability or anger
- Avoiding friends and social activities
- Difficulties understanding or relating to other people
- Changes in sleeping/eating habits, or feeling tired and low energy
