What is anxiety?
Anxiety is what we feel when we are worried, tense, or afraid – particularly about things that are about to happen, or that we think could happen in the future.
Anxiety is a natural human response when we feel that we are under threat. It can be experienced through our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations.
Anxiety arises from the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism where our bodies receive a boost of adrenaline to help us cope with perceived dangers. Some people
Anxiety can be caused by Changes in hormones/ chemicals in your body and other physical health problems.
Stressful events, either big or small. These could be at home or work
Environmental factors. E.G Pollution, lack of sunlight
Historical events chased or bitten by an animal
However, find it hard to control their worries and these symptoms of anxiety persist and can affect their daily lives. This can lead to some of the following symptoms:-
- Increased heart rate
- Muscle tension
- ‘Jelly legs’
- Tingling in the hands and feet
- Hyperventilating (over breathing)
- Dizziness
- Shortness of breath
Myths:
- It isn’t a real illness
- You can “snap out of it
- People with anxiety should snap out of it
- There needs to be a cause
